When can you do it?
-
You can choose a vacation placement at three points of the year:
- In the summer vacation BEFORE entering Level 5
- In the Christmas vacation
- In the Easter vacation (though this is generally not advised, due to proximity to exams)
Even within this framework there is flexibility: many students will choose to do their placement intensively – full-time over 2-3 weeks. It can also be spread over the whole vacation eg one 8-hour day per week over 11 weeks.

PROCESS AND PAPERWORK
If a student has identified a possible placement organisation, they may well make the initial approach to explore placement. Vocational Services will then follow up with further information, to enable the prospective supervisor to make an informed decision. Wherever possible, Vocational Services will conduct a follow-up to ensure the prospective placement organisation fits LST’s required criteria (we have a specific risk assessment process for placement in remote locations).
The placement student will then need to submit the Placement proposal (F5) form, outlining proposed objectives, preferably set up in collaboration with the supervisor. Each of the objectives must be S.M.A.R.T and must relate to at least one Key Development Area (same as in Level 4 placement).F5 form is then submitted to Vocational Services at least two weeks before the end of the term before the placement vacation. We will then authorise the placement.
You will also be required to complete a Log of hours (F10.V) as you go through placement and have it authorised by your supervisor before submitting it at the end of placement.
On completion of vacation placement, the vacation placement supervisor will receive the online Placement Supervisor Assessment (F6) which they will complete collaboratively with you and submit online.
All placement paperwork must be submitted on or before the first day of the LST term after the placement vacation.
