The aim of this module is to begin the process of transforming the students’ view of the Bible by demonstrating the importance of genre and historical context and, thus, the foundations of a more critically aware methodology. This foundation will serve as a basis for further modules in which these hermeneutical, exegetical, theological and applied foundations will be built upon

Introduction to the Old Testament (TH4002) 2023-24

The aim of this course is to immerse students in the world of the Old Testament as Christian Scripture and begin the process of transforming their understanding of the Bible by demonstrating a range of approaches to the Old Testament in contemporary scholarship. To complement related study of Christian Scriptures and hermeneutical tools necessary for their interpretation at Level 4, and lay foundations for further study at Levels 5 and 6. 

This is a Level 4 Theology Common Core module, shared with the Music and Worship programmes and the BA in Theology and Counselling.

NT Texts (TH4003) 2023-24

This module aims at introducing students to biblical content making use of exegetical skills acquired in Introduction to the New Testament (TH4001), and enabling them to further investigate exegetical problems and methods. It complements related study of Christian Scriptures and hermeneutical tools necessary for their interpretation at Level 4, and lays foundations for further study at Levels 5 and 6.

This is a compulsory Level 4 course for all HE Cert, HE Dip and BA Hons in Theology students.

OT Texts (TH4004) 2023-24

This course aims to introduce students to biblical content at the level of a whole book unit, enable them to investigate exegetical problems and methods, and address hermeneutical questions regarding the interpretation and application of canonical texts for today. It also aims to complement related study of Christian Scriptures and hermeneutical tools necessary for their interpretation at Level 4, and lay foundations for further study at Levels 5 and 6.

This is a Level 4 Theology compulsory module.

Introduction to Doctrine (TH4005) 2023-24

The aims of this module are to establish a basic overview of the key contours of Christian doctrine, and thereby deepen students’ existing knowledge, by enabling them to engage with key historical texts, recognize that doctrines have developed historically and need to be understood contextually, understand the interconnections between various doctrines, and explore how and why different groups differ over particular doctrines.

This is a Level 4 Theology Common Core module, shared with the BA in Theology, Music and Worship and the BA in Theology and Counselling programmes.

Global Christianity (TH4009) 2023-24

This module will enable students to understand the ways Christianity spread throughout the globe, to analyse the interaction between culture and Christian faith and practice, and to develop an awareness of the various contexts in which Christianity now exists across the globe.

This is a compulsory Level 4 course for all HE Cert, HE Dip and BA Hons in Theology students.

Practical Placement 1 (TH4012) 2023-24

This year long module combining a taught element and a practical placement will introduce the knowledge, skills and spiritual gifts for Christian engagement on a practical level within the context of the local church.  It will put particular emphasis on Christian discipleship and disciple-making in this context, and encourage students to integrate their learning through acquisition and participation with their own personal and spiritual formation as a Christian disciple.

This is a compulsory Level 4 course for all HE Cert, HE Dip and BA Hons in Theology students.

New Testament Greek Introduction 1 (iv) (TH4013) 2023-24

The aims of this module are to introduce basics of the Koine Greek language in which the New Testament was written, establish knowledge of selected aspects of grammar and vocabulary, translate selected New Testament texts, and explore selected New Testament passages with reference to the original Greek and various English translations.

This is a Level 4 Theology optional module.
